Measuring our significance, our value, and even our purpose through being needed/wanted by others is as much a genuine struggle as it is a misstep. Truth be told that pursuit is not only fleeting, but it ultimately leads to despair.
The pursuit we should strive, by the power of the Spirit, is to live into the intentional, even irrational, choice to embrace our belovedness in Christ. That decision will make it easier to reorient our sense of value and purpose while thriving in the community of faith.
People, for whatever reason, may not need or want you, but our confidence needs to be in recognizing that we, as individuals (just like St. John), can also make the bold claim to be the one whom Jesus loves.
Our identity is both found and rooted in His love, and not in the active needs or wants of others. People, regardless of the role they hold in your life, will always let you down.
But you…
You are whom Jesus loves.
So, place your significance, your value, and your purpose at his feet.
Be loved.
Be.
Love.
